The musician known as Feldiken comes to us from somewhere in between Brooklyn and New Jersey – a region ripe with influence and a gripping scene. I could go on about that musical landscape… but what I really liked about our conversation with Feldiken was his response to our “What do you think about when you first arrive on stage” question. He says “I think to myself, ‘It's up to me, now.’ Then I quickly think, ‘It's up to us,’ thinking about the band. Then I look out into the audience and think, ‘It's up to all of us.’”
One of the better mentalities we’ve heard, to be sure. It’s that mentality that Feldiken goes into his latest release, “Common Splendor”. The artist describes the effort: “Anytime people do something together there's a light between us. Things are happening. That's what I was trying to capture. There are a couple of story songs that illustrate that, like the title track and ‘Together in this Groove.’ The styles and sounds vary pretty widely, but it's all a new take on traditional forms. I tried to make the most human record I could.”

XXQs: Feldiken
PensEyeView.com (PEV): How would you describe your sound and what do you feel makes you stand out over the others in your genre?
Feldiken: The sound is varied and alive indie roots pop. The lyrics are unusually straightforward. I shoot for simple, practical and understandable. I also think my perspective about people is uniquely hopeful.
PEV: Calling Brooklyn, New York your home, what kind of music were you into growing up? Was anyone your main influence?
Feldiken: Well, obviously it varied in different years. I grew up in New Jersey. Probably my biggest influence was Bruce Springsteen. His work ethic and joy in finding connection with the audience thunderstruck me when I was a teenager. I've lived in Brooklyn for over a decade, and it is more sophisticated. Recently I'm into hip hop and Leonard Cohen, very poetic stuff.
PEV: Having played in the business for a good time now, what was it like for you when you first started out?
Feldiken: It was wild starting out. I was in collaborative bands, and we'd fight over who got to sing the songs. In high school, my band had three singers. We would each sing a third of the songs. But the first gig we played, hundreds of people showed up. Both of the other guys saw the crowd and asked me to sing their songs, they were "tired" or developed a "sore throat." I was scared too, but I was not going to bail so I did it. I could not look into eyes so I picked a spot on the wall to focus on. I remember one of the guys started singing once he saw me do it without dying. I'm slightly more confident now.
PEV: Do you remember the first time you thought to yourself – “I am really onto something!”?
Feldiken: Probably when I was seven years old and I sang and wrote a song with my brother. It was called "There are six different Monkeys in the World."
PEV: With that, what can fans expect from a live Feldiken show?
Feldiken: They'll see me having a ball, being myself connecting with people by playing songs I really love with people I really love. They'll feel good and have fun.
PEV: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you step on stage?
Feldiken: (laughs) I think to myself, "It's up to me, now." Then I quickly think, "It's up to us," thinking about the band. Then I look out into the audience and think, "It's up to all of us."
PEV: Any preshow rituals before going on stage or do you just wing it?
Feldiken: I use a small plastic turkey god and a sprig of parsley. Just kidding. But actually, that's what I do. I make jokes with my band mates and my wife to turn the tension into energy.
PEV: What was the underlining inspiration for your music? Where do get your best ideas for songs?
Feldiken: It's the way music helped save my life, by reminding me that I'm not alone. When I was a young person feeling disrespected and powerless, music helped connect me to other young people and our power. The way the songs come is different with each one. The sources are pretty mundane: a conversation, a touch or a feeling I really want to express. But I do have an agenda for us humans, and I write with that in mind.
PEV: Tell us about your latest release, “Common Splendor.” What can fans expect from this work?

PEV: Do you ever find yourself getting writer’s block and if so, how do you get over that?
Feldiken: I get it every day and I just start writing badly until I start writing well. It's the act of writing anyway that usually frees writer's block. If you put in an hour and that doesn't happen, then you walk away and do something else fun. You come back later and try again.
PEV: What’s one thing we’d be surprised to hear about Feldiken?
Feldiken: A lot of the music that moves me the most is dark and about gritty struggle.
PEV: Was there a certain point in your life when you knew that music was going to be a career for you?
Feldiken: I knew it very young, but had trouble acting on it. It was a great struggle, though, and I'm on the other side of it.
PEV: What one word best describes Feldiken?
Feldiken: Caring.
PEV: How is life on the road for you in the music world? Best and worst parts?
Feldiken: It's still pretty exciting for me. You're on a team that's together a lot of time doing something you love that connects with audiences. It's also a challenge like any job.
PEV: Is there one area you wish you could travel around and play that you have not yet?
Feldiken: Europe.
PEV: How have all your friends and family reacted to your career? What’s it like when you get to play at your hometown?
Feldiken: It's varied but I've had a lot of support recently. My wife is like an angel from heaven. I couldn't do this without her. My brother and sister are pretty great too. Some of my friends are in the band with me.
PEV: What can we find you doing in your spare time, aside from playing/writing music?
Feldiken: I love watching movies, catching up with friends and cuddling with my wife.
PEV: Is there an up and coming band or artist you think we should all be looking out for now?
Feldiken: There are a lot of them! I like Metric, Little Boots, B.O. B.
PEV: If you weren’t playing music now what do you think you would be doing as your career?
Feldiken: I was a school teacher for many years and I would probably be working with children.
PEV: So, what is next for Feldiken?
Feldiken: I want to perform songs from this album, "Common Splendor" live and will soon release a children/family album called "Make it Play."

Today on my absolute favorite perfume since it's release in 2007. I actually bought this in a box set with the matching shower gel on holiday. One of the best perfume purchases I ever made and I'm sticking to that.
Rush was developed in 1999 by perfumer Michel Almairac, whose impressive body of work includes such famous creations as Dior Fahrenheit and Chopard Casmir and excellent, if underrated, fragrances like L’Artisan Voleur de Roses and Rochas Aquawoman. With Rush, Almairac attempted to modernize chypre, a classic perfume accord that predates even the birth of modern perfumery in the late 19th century. Chypre has a very distinctive character, where the powdery darkness of moss interplays with dry patchouli, sweet floral notes and effervescent citrus. The mossy-patchouli character of Rush becomes apparent on the first inhale, before one even notices that the sparkle of the composition is set not by the classical citrus, but by the floral notes. The traditional pairing of rose and jasmine is reinterpreted as crisp and abstract, oscillating between magnolia and freesia. The fruity notes are milky, creamy, enveloping, but the effect is more of a dry peach skin, rather than the juicy flesh. A dose of vanilla serves to round out Rush and soften the angular beauty of its mossy woods.
Rush does not explore the dark terrain of chypre; instead, it goes for the luminous facets of this interesting fragrance structure. The main accents to the mossy woody notes of the fragrance are the milky-sweet note of peach and the radiance of the jasmine-lily of the valley note of hedione. While this by itself is not novel–Guerlain Mitsouko is a famous peach chypre, and the patchouli-hedione accord is the backbone of Diorella, among others–Rush achieves a striking degree of complexity through the careful balance of its accords. While one sees the base notes of Rush as soon as it is applied on the skin, the fragrance still undergoes interesting changes before the exquisite combination of moss, patchouli, vetiver and musk takes centerstage. To tie it in with my recent discussion of a fragrance pyramid, it is a great example of a modern laconic style being able to convey a complex idea. I find wearing Rush to be a pleasure, as it has a beautiful sillage and a very memorable aura. It suggests elegance with a hint of mystery.

I currently have the soul sl150 and they sound tons better than the beats solo. I am now trying to decide between the beats studio or the soul sl 300? From what ive researched they sound similar with the soul having more clarity,and the beats having more deeper bass. I guess it boils down to look and design.to me the studio looks better bcause they arent as big and bulky and the colr scheme is more subtle with the black with red accents, while the soul sl300 have the black base colr with the inner band being all white. I think the studio looks alot cooler. So i think with the sound,quality and price being basically identical i would have to choose the beats studio over the sou sl300. I think over much debate and research im going with the beats studio over the soul sl300.
