“Sexy Pop” baby – that’s all you need to know. Hank & Cupcakes (I think Cupcakes makes up the “Sexy” part of that phrase – no offense Hank) have executed a full on assault on NYC, bringing their unique bass and drum compositions (that’s right – no guitar) to some of the biggest venues the city has to offer. Coming to us from Israel, the duo has just dropped their first release, a 4-song collection with tunes as described by the band themselves: “It contains four songs, ‘Aint No Love’ - Our Single! This is a dancy groovy song collaborating with free stylin’ Shane MauX from the band Belikos; we love the way this song turned out. ‘Pleasure Town’ is our take on Tel Aviv. ‘She’s Lost Control’ is our cover by Joy Divison for some darkness and a Ballad called ‘Roses’ about being away from home.”

So now that you get the landscape of Hank & Cupcakes music, I’ll let them get into “Sexy Pop”. They say “Our sound is the combination of relatively poppy and catchy songwriting with the unusual duo ensemble of only a bass guitar (with a lot of effects) and a vocalist drummer. We are also a couple, so Sex & Pop mesh well here!” Does it ever. If you’re on the scene in New York, then you know about this band’s live show. XXQs: Hank & Cupcakes

PensEyeView.com (PEV): How would you describe your sound of what you call, “sexy pop” and what do you feel makes you stand out over the others in your genre?

Cupcakes: Our sound is the combination of relatively poppy and catchy songwriting with the unusual duo ensemble of only a bass guitar (with a lot of effects) and a vocalist drummer. We are also a couple, so Sex & Pop mesh well here! We are always looking for unique sounds and new ways to arrange our songs which is the result of daily rehearsals and constant sound exploring.

PEV: Originally hailing from Israel and Australia, what kind of music where the members of the band into growing up? Do you remember your first concert?

Hank: I never understood what was so interesting about music until a friend gave me a Beatles cassette when I was 12. That resulted in me listening exclusively to The Beatles for 2 years… After that I slowly started listening to Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Hendrix, Pink Floyd and that kind of stuff and then a long Jazz period especially focused on the 60’s, Classical music in general, Curtis Mayfield, Prodigy, Bob Dylan, Arabic music, Sly An The Family Stone, Neil Young. It’s a mess… I don’t really know how to answer this. The first live show I’ve seen was a Metallica concert in Tel Aviv that blew my brains out… it was unforgettable!

Cupcakes: I was influenced most from the music my parents liked which means I grew up listening in repeat mode to The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, one Don Mclean cassette (!) and later on I discovered Pink Floyd, The Doors, Queen, Suzanne Vega, Tori Amos. Growing up in Australia exposed me to Kyle Minogue and The movie ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ (classic 80’s! Which I watched with my young Aussie aunt) – and a show called “Young Talent Time” which nurtured my young aspirations to be a star. (A lot of dancing in front of the TV set with rotating costumes was involved at the age of age 5!)

PEV: Tell us your take on the music scene is like in your hometown and what was it like trying to break into it?

Hank: Back in Israel the music scene is very small and mainly mainstream-oriented. The niches in which the new, kicking and more experimental music can exist are very small and the audience is not as open to new and more innovative music as in NY.

PEV: With that, what can fans expect from a live Hank & Cupcakes show?

Cupcakes: Our fans (whom we love) already know that no two shows are alike, we are in a constant search of reinventing ourselves, performing our songs like it’s the first time every time. It’s really important to us to keep it fresh and to stay interested.

PEV: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you step on stage?

Cupcakes: “Shit! Where’s my drink!” Nah, my mind usually goes blank when I step on stage. Performance mode takes me to a different level of consciousness. On one hand, everything disappears, and on the other, I feel super-connected to the music, the energy and the crowd.

Hank: I usually check the sound, and if everything goes right, after a few bars into the song, everything disappears!

PEV: Having all been in other bands before how is playing with Hank & Cupcakes different then those other works?

Cupcakes: We have never been so entirely devoted to, and involved with, a musical project in the past. Hank & Cupcakes IS our lives. We’re living it, breathing it, thinking about it all the time. It’s a very intense experience!

PEV: What was the underlining inspiration for your music? Where do get your best ideas for songs?

Hank: We started the band out of boredom. We were feeling uninspired by the things we were doing. So, in a sense, Hank & Cupcakes is like ‘Goab, The desert of Colors” in the movie ‘The Never Ending Story’. By day, a desert (which was our daily life) which turned into ‘Perilin’- a wild, ever-growing forest of colors and growth by night, and back to the desert again so on and so forth. We started living in two realities: one, the daily routine and the second – our daily rehearsals – our little haven of creation. Two separate and opposite realities that co-existed. The platform to our inspiration was an emptiness we were looking to fill so everything in our day-to-day lives serves as that inspiration.

PEV: Thinking back to when you first started out do you ever look back at your career and think about your earlier days and how you’ve arrived where you are today?

Cupcakes: I don’t look back too much. I’d rather focus my energies on what’s ahead and getting there. Even though I did just say to Hank the other day, “If someone would have told me what I’d be doing now when I was 13, I wouldn’t have believed it!”

Hank: No, I’m only focused on the moment that I’m existing in, on my hopes and on the strategies necessary to make my hopes a reality

PEV: What’s one thing we’d be surprised to hear about the members of Hank & Cupcakes?

Cupcakes: We had an answer for this but got embarrassed and deleted it so...it’s a secret…

PEV: Was there a certain point in your life when you knew that music was going to be a career for you?

Cupcakes: I was all over the place when I was younger and was into acting, music and dance - all at once. Hank is the one who inspired me to really focus my energies on one thing. Now I feel all those things find their place in Hank & Cupcakes which is why it’s so fulfilling for me.

Hank: When I was about 18, I reached the conclusion that playing music is my biggest source of joy and decided that that’s what I want to do for the rest of my life.

PEV: Tell us about your latest release. What can fans expect from this?

Cupcakes: This is our first baby! We put all our love into it with the production skills of Grammy Award-winning producer Mark B. Christensen behind the wheel. It contains four songs, ‘Aint No Love’ - Our Single! This is a dancy groovy song collaborating with free stylin’ Shane MauX from the band Belikos, we love the way this song turned out. ‘Pleasure Town’ is our take on Tel Aviv. “She’s Lost Control’ is our cover for by Joy Divison for some darkness and a Ballad called ‘Roses’ about being away from home. PEV: How is life on the road for you in the music world? Best and worst parts?

Hank: We LOVE being on the road – it’s always a big adventure. Going to new places, meeting new people, playing new stages, it keeps us alert with a constant tension in our stomach which explodes when we get on stage. The worst parts? There are none!

PEV: Is there one area you wish you could travel around and play that you have not yet?

Hank: Europe, The West Coast, and we’re fantasizing about a tour in the Middle East to spread music and love.

PEV: How have all your friends and family reacted to your career? What’s it like when you get to play at your hometown?

Cupcakes: Our friends and family are completely supportive and we feel like every time we go back home to play, everyone’s beaming with pride. It’s very emotional going back. Hopefully, we’ll get to do it more often!

PEV: What can we find each of you doing in your spare time, aside from playing/writing music?

Cupcakes: I practice Yoga 3-4 times a week, it keeps me sane. We both like getting kicked in the face by an awesome live show.

Hank: My new obsession is jogging, I do a 3 mile run every other day!

PEV: Name one present and past artist or group that would be your dream collaboration? Why?

Cupcakes: Past - Paul Simon. He is my favorite artist. I can’t wait for his next album and can listen to his music over and over and over again.

Present - “Die Antwoord” from South Africa – these guys are so cool, they don’t give a fuck about what anyone thinks and I totally dig their music and attitude.

Hank: Past - Elvis Presley. I’d love to hear a Hank &n Cupcakes version of ‘I’m All Shook Up’ Present: I just recently got turned on to ‘Bloody Beetroots’, I would have loved for them to remix a song of ours. I love that crazy energy.

PEV: Is there an up and coming band or artist you think we should all be looking out for now?

Cupcakes: Die Antwoord!

Hank: Nico’s Gun.

PEV: If you weren’t playing music now what do you think each of you would be your career?

Cupcakes: Who knows? Life is so unexpected…

Hank: I’d probably be French psychiatrist.

PEV: So, what is next for Hank & Cupcakes?

Hank: After this tour, we’re flying to Israel to visit our family and friends and of course – to play. We’re already planning our next tour in February. We’re also mixing a new song we recorded which we a very excited about and are about to release two videos for our single ‘Aint No Love’. It’s two different interpretations by two different directors to the same song – it’s going to be very interesting!
