It's tough to explain what it's like to reach a new level of ability - the feeling you get when you take that next big step. It isn't surprising however, to hear that Sab the Artist has his own way of explaining that sensation: "For the first time I know I'm in my own lane. It feels lonely... but I don't mind being alone. As long as people are enjoying my music then I have a crowd to dance with. Or whatever it is we decide to do."
Sab the Artist is producing the kind of original sounds that no doubt get noticed - and his self-titled EP demonstrates this flawlessly. Sab says the collection "is a very beautiful album musically. I like pretty things, models, clothes, cars, paintings, humming birds... I wanted to make a pretty project. It's a great project, I believe people from all walks can listen and relate to every song on it." Sab continues on about his sound: "I think it's difficult for an artist to describe their own sound so I'll just say what the listeners are saying. They say it's original, that it makes them feel happy, it makes them smile, it's inspiring, beautiful, gold, wonderful. I don't argue with the listeners... I stand out from others because my story is unique in itself. I put my heart in the music and when you do that you will stand apart from the rest." Sab is still making music, so keep your eyes open for what's next. There's much more below, so keep reading for all the answers to the XXQ's.
XXQs: Sab The Artist
PEV: How would you describe your sound and what do you feel makes you stand out over the others in your genre?
Sab The Artist (SAB): I think it's difficult for an artist to describe their own sound so I'll just say what the listeners are saying. They say it's original, that it makes them feel happy, it makes them smile, it's inspiring, beautiful, gold, wonderful. I don't argue with the listeners.... I stand out from others because my story is unique in itself. I put my heart in the music and when you do that you will stand apart from the rest. Even if the music is bad, which mine is not.
PEV: Having been in the business for a good time now, what was it like for you when you first started out?
SAB: Well I've been doing music off and on for some time now. Really since the 3rd grade. I guess my journey thru music is like an axe chopping down a big tree.... in slow motion. Like the axe, I carve out a new chunk with each swing. I think the tree is about to fall. Honestly, I feel like I'm just beginning.
PEV: Do you remember the first time you thought to yourself – “I am really onto something!”?
SAB: Yea, It was about 6 months ago. I'm very critical of myself. For the first time I know I'm in my own lane. It feels lonely... but I don't mind being alone. As long as people are enjoying my music then I have a crowd to dance with. Or whatever it is we decide to do. Horned Heart.
PEV: With that, what can fans expect from a live Sab The Artist show?
SAB: I'm an entertainer first. My shows are passionate and precise. Also spontaneous, I leave spaces open for the unexpected. The energy is unique at every show, I don't force the energy. I cater to it. Also drama. When I perform I feel as though I'm on set of a movie. There is a lot of drama involved in my shows. I'd rather display to the audience how my personality is during an intimate setting with a loved one, then ask them to say "hooo!". It's very unique.
PEV: What is the first thing that comes to mind when you step on stage?
SAB: I think to myself... "Ahhh, I'm home". The stage is my sanctuary. I'm more comfortable on stage than I am on my living room couch. If you meet me and don't understand me.... when you see me on stage you'll say..."Ok, that's what he's about".
PEV: Any pre-show rituals before going on stage or do you just wing it?
SAB: I never wing it. I meditate. Breathe. Shadow box in the mirror to work up a sweat. I absolutely need my personal microphone and mic stand. There's nothing like show time.
PEV: What was the underlining inspiration for your music? Where do get your best ideas for songs?
SAB: Love is my inspiration. Love is a science. The deepest emotion humans know. I need not think of nothing else. To much love to explore. It's like the universe. We know very little about it. I'm a love astronaut… yeah... I am.
PEV: Tell us about your latest self-titled EP release. What can fans expect from this work?
SAB: The Sab The Artist EP is a very beautiful album musically. I like pretty things, models, clothes, cars, paintings, humming birds... I wanted to make a pretty project. It's a great project, I believe people from all walks can listen and relate to every song on it. People’s mothers really like it so that makes me proud. If your mom enjoys it... then your ready for the big times.
PEV: What’s one thing we’d be surprised to hear about Sab The Artist?
SAB: Hmmm... I don't know. Let’s see. I play tennis. I speak an African language called Tigrigna (Eritrean), David Bowie is the ultimate music artist to me. Yea, I don't do things to surprise anyone. I feel all people owe it to them selves to be diverse.
PEV: What one word best describes Sab The Artist?
SAB: I... am... LOVE
PEV: How is life on the road for you in the music world? Best and worst parts?
SAB: The road is alright. You gotta be cut out for it. As long as I can go comfortable I'm good. The best part is being able to travel and perform for new faces every night. I love it. The worst part? Losing track of the days of the week and then feeling like your in the Twilight Zone sometimes. Overall it's worth it for me.
PEV: Is there one area you wish you could travel around and play that you have not yet?
SAB: Yup, I'm looking forward to playing for 100,000 fans in Europe. That'll be fantastic.
PEV: What can we find you doing in your spare time, aside from playing/writing music?
SAB: Shopping, sports, studying, vacationing with my family. Exploring nature. Just having a plain ole good time.
PEV: Is there an up and coming band or artist you think we should all be looking out for now?
SAB: Yes. Ultra Chorus and any band associated with their label SO-TM. Extremely awesome.
PEV: If you weren’t playing music now what do you think you would be doing as your career?
SAB: I'd probably be a University Professor or a Psychologist. Something that has to do with teaching.
PEV: So, what is next for Sab The Artist?
SAB: The future looks bright. Right now it's all about the music. My job is to make beautiful music for everyone to enjoy. That's my focus. Here I come.
